LETTER

The same agenda

BY ASHALI VARMA

EXECUTIVE PUBLISHER

The Earth Times prides itself on being the newspaper of record in the special areas of our journalistic “best” –environment, sustainable development, population, women’s issues.  But it especially prides itself on being the newspaper of record for the major meetings hosted by the United Nations-Rio, Cairo, Vienna, Barbados, Cairo, Copenhagen, to our present challenging assignment here in Beijing.  In reporting on these events, we follow the simple journalistic practice of reporting on these events, we follow the simple journalistic practice of reporting as thoroughly and interestingly as our resources permit on what is going on, so that delegates and other participants at these complex affairs can keep up with the progress, setbacks, confrontations, compromises and agreements in a fashion that provides for comprehensive understanding.

Today the main event during these 15 days in Beijing begins—the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women.  We are proud, once again, to be the newspaper of record.  Again, our agenda is the reporting of the issues of the Conference, telling the big story and the many smaller stories.  Impartial and objective, yes.  And sympathetic to the goals of the Conference? Definitely.
