Topping to be guest at new development discussions

By Ashali Varma

On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Earth Summit, The Earth Times is launching a series of discussion luncheons, “Dialogues on Sustainable Development and the Human Environment.”

These dialogues will feature prominent thinkers, writers, journalists, scientists, economists and others who will reflect on issues relating to sustainable development such as environment, health, education, population, poverty alleviation, economic growth, trade, aid, and empowerment of women. The Earth Times will report on these dialogues in its print and Internet editions, and organize them into annual anthologies.

The inaugural dialogue, on June 24, will feature Seymour Topping, Administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes, and former Managing Editor of The New York Times. He will initiate a discussion on how the media of industrialized and developing countries could enhance coverage of sustainable development issues.

The invited audience of about 60 men and women from diverse fields will be asked to comment on three related themes: (1) Challenges in the area of energy conservation, climate change and consumption patterns; (2) problems of population growth and their impact on economic growth; and (3) how developing countries can accelerate South-South cooperation to foster sustainable human development.

British Petroleum has joined the Earth Times Foundation-sponsor of The Earth Times-in supporting the Earth Times Dialogues. The Earth Times, the leading independent international newspaper on environment and sustainable development, is in its sixth year of publication. Its print edition is published twice a month, and it also has a daily edition on the Internet.
